“Ice Cave” Fulmer Mine, Phillipsburg, NJ

I stumbled upon an article about this Ice Cave in Phillipsburg. It peaked my interest and on a warm winter weekend we decided to scout it out. I knew there weren’t going to be any icicles at NJ’s current rate of no snow. So, there will be an update in the unknown future for this hike.

We found parking on the side of the road of River Road just off of Route 22. There was enough spots for 8-12 cars.

From the parking lot follow the Blue Trail. Once you get to the Orange Trail it’s a short hike to the Fulmer Mine, Ice Cave.

Before seeing the trail map, I had a lot of confusion about the ice cave. When doing research for the hike I always saw the Ice Cave and Fulmer Mine separated, never together. I was trying to figure out if they were the same place or two different caves that just happened to be in Phillipsburg. Turns out they are the same place!

The ice cave turns out to be a mine that was used in the 1860’s – 1880’s. We opted to continue on the blue and orange trail. If you look around you’ll notice other blast sites and sunken spots along the mountain. It was fun to go around and see how it shaped the landscape.

Along the rest of the hike there were rock surfaces that didn’t have direct sunlight. Therefore we did manage to see some icicles.

All in all, it was a fun, short, and pretty hike. We look forward to going back, hopefully in snow, to get the full experience.
